MOTIVATE YOUR CHILD

Examination put a lot of psychological pressure on the students. They get lot in the maze of questions and answers. There are some questions which they cannot understand. There are questions to which they cannot find answers. There are so many questions to which they know answers but cannot recall. They want to perform well but they have their own limitations. They get confused what to learn, what to leave. We expect them to come out on top. The peer’s pressures also make them feel sulking. They are confused and it leads them to a vicious circle of depression. The more they try to perform more they get depressed.

The only remedy for this problem is the preventive action. We the parents should act in such a manner that our child should not find himself marooned on the desert of depressive thoughts. The best method to prevent this stage is to motivate the child and lead him all the way through. All major wars and battles have been won with proper motivation & astute leadership.
Every child is a unique mix of abilities & problems. No motivational theory can suit the nature of two children. The best persons to provide motivation & leadership to a child are the parents. Here I enumerate some steps that can help you to motivate and lead your child.

1. Both parents should talk to their child for at least 15 minutes daily. The topic should be of child’s interest only. It can be studies, cricket, sports, movies and even girlfriends or boyfriends.
2. The parents should let the child talk in the conversation and should always express their moderate viewpoints on the subject of the talk.
3. In between the talk you should ask some questions to child regarding his studies, career etc. The questions can be
a. What are you planning to do tomorrow?
b. What is the score you are aiming to achieve?
c. What are your strong subjects?
d. In which subject you feel the problem?
e. What help he needs from you?
f. What are the difficult topics in a particular subject?
g. What does he do in his leisure time?

4. Three four rounds of these type of talks will rejuvenate your child. Once your child may hesitate to answer your questions. Do not react. Simply rephrase the questions on the next day. Make a bridge of talks with your child. Once the bridge is made you will automatically gain the confidence of your child.

5. Once the bond of confidence is created you start posing your simple queries to the child like
a. Your expectations from him.
b. Importance of this examination
c. Your aims for him
d. Rewards you have planned for him
e. Explain him the importance of studies with some live examples

6. At any stage you should not
a. Get angry with him
b. Discourage him
c. Criticize him

7. On the other hand your behavior should be
a. Encouraging
b. Positive
c. Analytical
d. Look for small small chunks of improvement

8. Proper & positive talk sessions will seed a passion of performing in the mind of the child. His mindset will be like a spaceship raring to conquer the universe. You have to only take care of earth command. Note that without your leadership child cannot give his best performance (When I talk about child I mean son/daughter irrespective of age). You should provide him proper direction and zero in his target. You yourself will be amazed to see that how smoothly your child will achieve the targets.

9. Before I sigh off I want you to keep in mind
a. Have faith in your child. Whatever he is today it’s just because of you.
b. Examination will come and go but any harm to child’s psycho can be permanent.
c. Your child needs you at every stage of his life.
d. Give only realistic targets to your child.
e. His basic flaws should be identified and you should find the ways & means to correct them
f. Any below expectation result in any examination is not end of road.
g. Be a true coach, motivator for your child

10. I know that if these steps are followed by parents with truth, honesty & integrity the parents will have full charge of their child’s emotions. They will never allow his emotions to be negative.
